Happy 2020 y’all! For the past few years I mentioned many times “I want to blog more” “I want to start a YouTube channel” “I want to share all the things I learn with others”… well, it’s time. I have two good reasons, First, I received the “go ahead” from someone who has helped me unlock my gifts. He said “You’re going to do it, and it’s because you’re ready this time.” (I think so too, thank you!) Second, I want to make a promise/bet with myself that I cannot purchase any new beauty products without blogging or sharing them with you all. I get so excited to try new products and I’m a frequent flyer at Sephora and Ulta, it’s time to pump the brakes and share my findings with hopes to help someone else. Let’s be more than pretty!
Without further or due, here’s what I purchased on my latest cruise on Ulta.com:
Morphe – Highlight & Contour Beauty Sponge $8.00
This was the 4th time I have purchased this sponge. I usually pick up a new one about every month as sponges can accumulate a lot of germs. I’m no beauty guru, but I think this is a great sponge for applying liquid foundation, concealer, and even setting powder! I will rinse mine every morning with warm water adding a little bit of soap to remove old makeup, wringing out until the water runs clear. Squeezing out any remaining water and then squeezing it in a towel to really absorb any excess moisture. I like that this sponge is red too, it doesn’t stain too easily with the products I use so it remains a rich red color. Pictured above is the packaging and the sponge itself, along with my old (not washed) vs new one together. Great price point as well.
MAC – Mineralize Blush in shade “Love Joy” $30.00
I have a bit of brand loyalty going on when it comes to MAC blushes. The first blush I ever tried was picked out for me by a MAC MUA years ago and the few (like 5) other brands I have tried since then over the years just don’t seem to compare. The pigments in MAC blushes are so beautiful and a little goes a long way, plus they blend well. They come in a great black compact with a clear lid, 10 out of 10 for packaging. I will say that the shade “Love Joy” looks more bronzy in person than pictured on the Ulta website, but it is still gorgeous.
ColourPop Brow Boss Gel $6.50
First impression of the ColourPop Brow Boss Gel was “wow it’s tiny!”. It is a very small component, but aligns with the price point. The formula is white, but applies and dries clear. The applicator is a very small spoolie that holds a lot of product for its size. After using a brow pencil I applied this gel over my brows and I definitely like it. It doesn’t make your brows feel stiff but does hold them in place which is so nice. Other brow gels I’ve used literally seemed like I was applying hair gel to my brows and they’d be rock solid all day long– I suppose that’s the point of brow gel, but I like this one better because it seems more natural. Thumbs up ColourPop!
ColourPop Super Shock Highlighter “Flexitarian” $8.00
I was so excited to try this highlighter, between the reviews and photos I saw online it looked so beautiful. It comes in a white plastic jar with the ColourPop branding on the clear lid. It’s super creamy, which threw me off a bit. It reminds me of Physician’s Formula’s butter products a little, except with a harder consistency. I swatched it with my finger and it was incredibly pigmented, it looked like I dipped my finger in paint! This morning when I dipped my brush into it nothing transferred to the brush– weird! I had to apply small dots to my cheek bones with my fingers and then blend with the brush. Tricky, but came out really nice and by applying it this way I felt I had a little more control of where the product went, even when I buffed it out. I’d like to try applying with a beauty sponge to see what happens.
Flawless by Finishing Touch – Instant and Painless Facial Hair Remover $19.99
I saw this little tool many many times in drugstores and Ulta but never looked into it until I saw it mentioned on @amy.makeupartist ‘s Instagram story (if you’re not following her, you should! She’s incredibly talented, helpful and shares all things beauty). I really like this so far, I think it works well. I’m used to using another type of facial hair remover tool that looks more like a comb. I get peach fuzz on my cheeks and while it’s barely noticeable, I think makeup applies better when it’s not there. It’s very small, easy to use and is painless. Smooth skin for the win!
MAC – Pro Longwear Paint Pot in “Bare Study” $22.00
Wow! I haven’t purchased one of these in a very long time. I used to use these as eye shadows when I was in high school (I think they used to be packaged in a tube too). MAC never disappoints with great packaging, a heavy duty glass jar with the iconic black lid. This Pro Longwear Paint Pot in the shade “Bare Study” is so beautiful. It is a soft beige with light gold pearl shimmers. I began using this as a base for eyeshadows and it really is a game changer (again, recommended by @amy.makeupartist on Instagram, thanks girl). This helps the eye shadow stay on but still remains blend-able. I’d call this a new staple piece in my makeup bag.
ColourPop – California Love Eyeshadow Palette $18.00
ColourPop! ColourPop! ColourPop! It seems like not only are they dominating the internet these past few months, but a new eyeshadow palette seems to drop almost every single week– and they are all GORGEOUS! I finally decided to try it out. I’ve learned that orangey-browns help blue eyes pop, so I always seem to gravitate towards those colors. I swatched a few of these on my hand upon arrival and I instantly thought “I’ve been missing out on these products for FAR TOO LONG!” They are super pigmented, even the glitter shadows! The packaging is a really cute cardboard flip top with magnetic closure, it aligns well with the price point, however it may not be good for travel. These colors are phenomenal… can’t wait to play with this palette more!
UPDATE– I tried out an eye look with this palette last night and again the colors are incredibly pigmented and blend really easily. I’m having second thoughts on if this was a good color selection for me personally though. I have my eyes on a few other palettes on their site. There is such a wide array of options.
Dermablend- Flawless Creator Multi-Use Liquid Foundation Drops 30N $40.00
One of my favorite YouTubers talked about this product, Casey Holmes. I watched her apply it on her video and knew I needed to try it. She applied it straight out of the bottle as a foundation on top of the Dermablend brand primer and it was totally full coverage and really did look flawless. I can agree it is full coverage and does cover imperfections. It’s matte too which I look for due to my combination skin. I found that 30N was a good shade for me during the winter. It comes in a tincture style bottle as pictured above, which isn’t my favorite, but it makes sense as to why they made it this way. It’s important to shake this foundation well before applying. It works great as a foundation and stays on all day, I’m curious to try it out with Dermablend’s primer and setting powder to see if it makes a difference.
- Kylie Cosmetics Holiday 5 Piece Lip Set – $30.00
My apologies, because this was a limited edition holiday set, it is no longer available online. However, the Matte Liquid Lipsticks are available on her website & Ulta’s in some of the colors. I had my eyes on this set for about a month before I purchased it. I have a few Kylie lip kits I’ve purchased and while they are really nice, I don’t grab for them often at all so that’s where my hesitation was. I had been wanting to try some other nude colors from Kylie but also a red from her line. The photos online are so beautiful and the products she has out do not lack in pigments. I went for it. To be honest, I’ve tried all of these on but have yet to wear any out. They are intense– in a good way of course! My only complaint is they are very drying as they are liquid matte lipsticks. A good lip balm or primer would probably help.
Benefit Cosmetics – Hoola Cream-to-Powder Quickie Contour Stick $28.00
Ooooh honey! This was a great find! I have watched so many reviews where people rave about Benefit’s Hoola Powder Bronzer for contouring and with this color being in a stick form is a game changer (especially for non-professionals, like myself 😉 ). The ease of application from this gives you so much control of where the product is going, all you have to do is BLEND! And it blends so well! The color is beautiful and I cannot recommend this enough.
Lancôme – Monsieur Big Mascara $25.00
I used to live in South Carolina on and off the past 3 years. Ulta was right down the street so I’d go there often, just to get out of the house. I went in looking for a new mascara. I was looking at the Too Faced ones that everyone raves about, I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. However, when I was reading reviews of that one many people said it flaked and I could not have mascara flakes on my face….no way! One of the guys working sparked up conversation with me and he suggested I try this mascara. He said Lancôme headquarters actually produces many of the other leading brand’s mascaras (whether that is true or not, he sounded like he knew what he was talking about). I bought the mascara about 2-3 years ago and haven’t switched it up since. I find that this one does NOT flake at all, it comes off easily with makeup remover, and even water alone, and the tube lasts a long time– months! It will go on sale here and there too which is a plus!
Wow, you made it through my amateur make-up review?! THANK YOU! I am not a makeup artist by all means, I’m more of a tech nerd, but I LOVE products and trying out new makeup and watching others do the same. I hope you gathered some good insight and if you have any questions I love to chat about this stuff. Let me know what your top favorite products are in the comments.
